From What Distance Will You Average 3.14 Shots?

Happy Pi Day, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying The Players Championship so far. As a proud math nerd, I can’t resist celebrating Pi Day.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll dive into the distance (in yards) from which you’ll average exactly 3.14 shots!

What Can You Learn From This?

Take a look at the table above. It shows the distance at which a golfer of a certain handicap index will average exactly 3.14 shots, whether from the fairway or the rough. To put it another way, if you manage to knock it on the green from your “3.14 distance” and then two-putt, you’re gaining strokes.

For example, if you’re a 15 handicap and find yourself 27 yards out in the rough, you’ll be expected to average 3.14 shots from there. If you can get down in just 3 shots, you’re saving 0.14 strokes compared to that average!
