Play More, Get Better (the math says so)

Will you get better if you play more golf?

The three tables below look at golfers by rounds played in a calendar year (January - December). Each table looks at different handicap index levels (**note** this was the golfer’s handicap at the start of the year).

  • First table is “low” index golfers (0.0 to 9.9)

  • Second table is “mid” index golfers (10.0 to 19.9)

  • Third table is “high” index golfers (20.0+)

Here’s the headline across all three: volume wins.

  • Low index (0.0 to 9.9)

    • If they play 19 rounds or less, they are more likely to get worse than better. Push to 60+ rounds and 60% improve, with a median improvement of 1.34 strokes on their index. Single-digits golfers need reps to stay sharp.

  • Mid index (10–19.9)

    • For those that play 30 or more rounds, between 69% and 74% of those golfers improve, and the median improvement is about 2 strokes.

  • High index (20+)

    • For those that play 30 or more rounds, between 79% and 88% of those golfers improve, and the median improvement is about 4 strokes..

What This Means For You

  • Target 30+ rounds/year (9-hole loops count).

  • Single-digits: under 20 rounds is danger zone. You are more likely to get worse.

  • 20+ index: say “yes” to golf as much as you can. The more you play, the better you will get.
