Chances of Getting Up and Down
Today we are going to look at a few tables that show your chances of getting up and down from different distances, broken down by lie and skill level.
But First…
I have a very special announcement, along with a personal favor to ask.
My 13-year-old daughter Abby wrote a novel called “Trapped”.
She is a voracious reader and always wanted to write her own novel. So, she did. It was just published.
She started two years ago while in 8th grade and finished it in 9th grade. She'd sit down and write for hours straight, then go on walks with my wife and me to tell us about all her plot ideas and character development.
Then she would go back to her computer and just keep plugging away. The dedication I watched from her was something else.
I would be thankful if you clicked the Amazon link below to check out the book. If it’s not your type of book, maybe you know someone you could gift it to?
I’m just a proud Dad trying to help my daughter! OK, let’s get back to golf!

OK - let’s dive in and take a look at the chances you get the ball up and down. The three tables below show the chances from the fairway, rough and sand.
As much as we love the idea of “getting up and down,” these tables are a good reality check… it’s hard to get the ball up and down… and it gets really hard from the sand.
Even from 10–14 yards, bunker success rates lag well behind fairway and rough for every handicap range. For our mid-to-high handicap friends, while we love the idea of getting the ball up and down, reducing how often it takes you to get the ball in the hole in four or more strokes is going to help you score better.
This means we need that first shot to end up on the green as often as possible! Reduce those double chips!
Here is the data. The column labels across the top are handicap index.
