Do You Three Putt More Than Others at Your Skill Level?

This week’s topic comes courtesy of Derrick R., who emailed me with a great question:
"How often do players at different skill levels have zero three-putts (or worse) in a round?"

So, Derrick, this one’s for you. We're diving into some putting data from ArccosGolf (Use code DATALOU15 to save 15%). Specifically, we’re looking at how often players across skill levels three-putt or worse during a round.

Across the top, it shows how many three-putts (or worse) happened in a round.

  • Scratch (0 index) golfers have zero three-putts (or worse) in 36% of their rounds. In More than 1 out of 3 rounds the typical scratch golfer has zero three putts (or worse).

  • 5-index players? 26% of rounds with no three-putts (or worse).

  • But for 20-index players, that number drops to just 7%.

  • To make matters tougher for higher-handicap players, rounds with five or more three-putts (or worse) happen a whopping 28% of the time at the 20-index level.

Our higher-handicap friends are three-putting a lot. But the good news is this: improving your speed control on longer putts and dialing in your putts inside 10 feet can help drastically reduce those numbers.

So, how often are you three-putting?
