How Far Do Golfers Really Hit Their Irons?

A big thank you to our sponsors who keep this newsletter free to the reader:

Today’s issue is brought to you by The Stack System:

Golfers that have used The Stack System have seen an average swing speed gain of 9.2 mph. The new Stack Radar integrates seamlessly with the app and makes entering your sessions automatic. I highly recommend both!

How your wrists work in the swing is critical. The Hack Motion wrist sensor is an amazing training aid. My coach (Mark Crossfield) did a great review of the Hack Motion. Watch that review video here.

How Far Do Golfers Really Hit Their Irons?

One of the most common questions I receive is about how far golfers of different skill levels hit their irons. Over the years, I’ve published a lot of data on how amateur golfers perform from specific distances, but many wonder how players with different handicaps compare when using the same club.

For example, from 150 yards out, a scratch golfer will typically use a shorter club than a higher-handicap player. As your handicap improves, you’ll tend to hit the ball farther, meaning you can use a shorter iron for the same shot.

Many golfers have asked via email or DM whether a scratch player with a 7-iron would perform similarly to a 10-handicap golfer with the same club. To answer this, I dove deep into the Arccos Golf database (Use code DATALOU15 to save 15%)

The short answer? The performance gap between handicaps using the same club is huge! Scratch players perform much better, which is a big part of what makes them scratch players.

Let’s break down the numbers!

In the Data Below, I’ve included three tables that showcase the difference between skill levels:

  1. Median Distance: This shows how far each iron travels for different handicap levels (from the fairway, total distance).

  2. Green Hit Percentage: The percentage of greens hit from the fairway with each iron.

  3. Median Proximity: The average distance in feet from the hole after hitting an iron (from the fairway).

My Thoughts

These numbers illustrate the significant performance gap between players of different handicaps, even when using the same iron. They can also provide helpful benchmarks for what to expect from your irons depending on your skill level.
