How Far Players Actually Hit Their Irons

This week’s issue was supposed to be about speed control in putting. It is the deepest dive on the subject I have ever done. Can’t wait to release it!

I switched it up however because of what I saw on social media today.

Frankie Borrelli, from Barstool Golf, posted a video where he was showing his stock carry numbers with his irons. There were a lot of people in the comments saying he didn’t hit the ball far enough… that he is “too short”.

Frankie posted about his numbers and I jumped in and posted scratch numbers alongside Frankie’s numbers:

To clarify, Frankie’s numbers are CARRY numbers, and the Arccos numbers are TOTAL yardage. As you can see, Frankie, who carries an index just over 5, hits his irons a bit longer than the typical scratch player.

While it’s not shocking to see all the posts saying Frankie is “short” (it is social media after all), it was very annoying watching Frankie get beat up in the comments, especially when so many are doing that from the standpoint of having a completely uninformed perspective around how far golfers are actually hitting their clubs.

So here is something to help you better understand how far golfers ACTUALLY hit their irons. I have shared this before.

This is the median TOTAL distance for different skill levels:

People often ask how far Tour Pros are hitting their irons. Here is the most recent info from Trackman on that (you can find that image here)

What Can You Learn From This?

Know your numbers. Having a clear understanding about the range of distances you hit each club will enable you to make better decisions on the course.

And most importantly:

Have realistic expectations about how far you “should” hit your clubs.
