The 3-Foot Lag Putting Game
Want to three-putt less? Get your lag putts as close as possible.
From 25, 35 or 45 feet, a putt that finishes inside 3 feet is a FANTASTIC result. Long or short doesn't matter. You've left yourself a very makeable next putt and taken most of the three-putt risk off the table.
Here's a simple game (with benchmarks below) to train exactly that.
First…
For some of us, the season is almost over. Winter weather will soon be here. If you have been thinking about getting yourself setup with an indoor launch monitor, let this be the year you get that going!
Right now SkyTrak has some great deals running. You can save up to $1300 on a SkyTrak plus get one year free software. They have a ton of other deals as well. They also just released a new software version and it is loaded with updates.
SkyTrak is a sponsor of this newsletter and the sponsors keep this newsletter free. So if you are ready to finally get your indoor setup up and running, I highly recommend them.

The Setup
Pick a "hole." A tee, a ball marker or a ghost hole all work. A real hole is fine too if you prefer.
Put a marker 3 feet short of the hole and another 3 feet past it.
Stop the ball between those two markers.
Anything that stops inside that window finished within 3 feet of the hole.
Never Hit the Same Putt Twice in a Row
This is the most important part.
Set up at least TWO stations. In a perfect world, stand in the middle of the green and set up a few "holes" at different distances and directions. Rotate through them. Never putt to the same hole twice in a row.
On the course, you never get a second try at the same lag putt. Your practice shouldn't give you one either.
Track It
Hit 20 putts to a given distance and count how many finish inside the window. Write it down. Keep track of it over time.
Then see how you stack up. The table below shows how often golfers at each skill level get it inside 3 feet from 25, 35 and 45 feet.

Notice how fast these drop. From 45 feet, even 0-5 index players only get about 1 in 3 inside 3 feet.
My Thoughts
Find your handicap column and use it as your starting benchmark. Once you're beating it on a regular basis, start chasing the column to the left.
And manage your expectations. If you're a 10-15 index and get 5 of 20 inside the window from 45 feet, you're right on benchmark. Pat yourself on the back.
If you spend time on this, you'll three-putt less. Guaranteed.
See you next week!
