The Value of One More Par Putt
Last week we talked about GIR+1, which is simply being on the green with a chance to putt for par (whether you hit the green in regulation or took an extra shot to get there).
Today we are going to expand on that and look at something that can make a HUGE difference in your scoring - having just one more par putt. I've talked before about how important it is to limit those big numbers, and this data really drives that home.
The Stats
Off to the Arccos database we go! (Use code DATALOU15 to save 15%).
Let's look at how scoring changes for a 10 index when they increase how many greens they hit where their first putt is for par.
The typical 10 index averages 6.5 greens in regulation per round. Below is what their scoring average looks like with 6 greens in regulation, broken down by how many “extra” greens they "hit" where the first putt is for par:
5 extra greens = 90.1
6 extra greens = 89.1
7 extra greens = 87.4
8 extra greens = 86.4
9 extra greens = 85.0
10 extra greens = 83.8
11 extra greens = 82.6
12 extra greens = 81.9
My Thoughts
Look at those numbers! For a 10 index who hits their typical 6 greens in regulation, each “extra” green they hit where the first putt is for par lowers their scoring average by 1.2 shots. That is eye opening!
Think about that - just by getting yourself one more par putt, you can drop more than a stroke off your scoring average. You don't need to hit perfect shots. You just need to avoid those big numbers and give yourself more chances at par.
I am sure you are tired of me saying this, but the key to lower scores is NOT more birdies, it's reducing those blow-up holes. Getting on the green with a chance at par is a great way to do exactly that!
