Where Your Putts Actually Happen

And where you should actually be practicing…

Got an email from a reader asking how much of his putting practice should be from close to the hole versus farther out. Good question. Many people don't think about it. They roll a few three-footers as a warm-up and then spend a chunk of their session lagging 50-footers across the green.

Here's what the data actually says about where putts happen on the course.

Across all skill levels around 55% of all putts happen inside 10 feet. Nearly 70% inside 15 feet. Roughly 86% inside 30 feet.

SEVEN out of every ten putts you hit on a golf course are from inside 15 feet. Only about one in seven comes from beyond 30.

So when you grab a sleeve of balls and walk to the practice green, make sure you are focusing on the distances that can move the needle for you.

My Thoughts

If you have 20 minutes to practice putting, do not spend it lagging 50-footers from across the green. The math does not support it. You'll face that putt maybe once a round, if at all. You'll face putts inside 15 feet over and over and over.

The most makeable putts you have are inside 10–12 feet, and that's also where the most putts come from. Those are the ones that can decide your round. Make them and you shoot lower. Miss them and you don't.

Spend your time there. Three to about ten feet is where you can shave a ton of strokes.

Don’t completely neglect the other distances, but prioritize those short ones!
