Why Front Pins Are Wrecking Your GIR Stats (and What To Do About It)

Let’s talk about something that’s quietly costing you strokes…

Front pins.
You know the ones… cut just a few steps onto the green, right on the edge of disaster. The kind that look inviting but have double bogey written all over them.

I pulled hit green percentage data from Arccos (Use code DATALOU15 to save 15%) for shots from 120–130 yards in the fairway. The data is sliced by hole location (front, back, left, right) and handicap index (0, 5, 10, 15, 20). Each pin was located within 5 yards of its respective edge.

The results? Shooting at front pins has lowest hit green percent for all skill levels.

Hit green percent by hole location:

What Should You Do?

Stop playing to the front number!

If the pin is 122 and it’s 4 from the front edge, you need to pick a target past the hole. You’re not trying to hit it long. You’re trying to hit it smart. Front pins require a different approach:

  • Stop “shooting the flag” and playing that number.

  • Start playing a number that gives your shot pattern room to breathe.

Do this, and you’ll find yourself with more putts and fewer tricky chips.

Key Takeaway

You don’t always miss the green to a front pin because you hit a bad shot. You missed the green because you gave yourself no cushion.

Give yourself a buffer. Add a few yards. Trust the math.

You’ll hit more greens, reduce how often you are short-sided, and shoot lower scores.
